Vintage Japanese boro cotton kimono cloth ikat woven indigo fabric material purple and red stripe
Beautiful vintage Japanese cotton boro kimono fabric piece. The pattern is woven and dyed, an ikat weaving. Indigo blue almost black background with woven stripes of grey, red and wine into the fabric. Soft textured piece of fabric. Stitching holes visible along one side. Very good condition some small areas of wear.
Rectangular. It measures 33 cm across and is 80cm long.
Boro thus came to predominately signify clothing worn by the peasant farming classes, who mended their garments with spare fabric scraps out of economic necessity. In many cases, the usage of such a boro garment would be handed down over generations, eventually resembling a patchwork after decades of mending.
